Let’s talk about the Table Mountain hike times and distances. There are many travellers that simply want to tick this adventure off the bucket list and get up Table Mountain as quickly as possible and fair enough to you, any route is better than taking the Cable car.

You also have the hikers and nature lovers who will do anything to spend more time up on the mountain and really make the most of their once in a life time opportunity. To state the obvious the longer you hike and the further you go, the more you will get to see. Table Mountain has so much to offer, it is by no means the same all over, but instead, vast in appearance, with changing terrains, various flora, ever-changing sky’s and views that vary as you hike over to the different sides.

How long does it take to hike Table Mountain?

Half day hikes generally take an estimate of less than 3 hours and cover a distance of about 3 km. Although these hikes are shorter and take less time they are generally steeper. On our half day Table Mountain hikes, we hike up the front face of Table Mountain and look down over the city and Atlantic coast.

Our full day hikes up Table Mountain generally take an estimated time of 4 – 5 hours and cover a distance of 5km. These hikes show you a lot more of the mountain and cover a greater distance than half day hikes up the front face. Our full day hikes generally take you up the eastern or western slopes of the Table Mountain range and then we hike over the back Table which has an abundance of flora.

Hiking route 1: Platteklip Gorge
Start: Tafelberg Road
Hike time: 2.5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically easy, physically challenging.
Terrain: Clear well maintained path, stair like route, large rocks.
Short description:The shortest route up Table Mountain. Often referred to as more boring and less scenic than other routes on the mountain, although it is still a great hike with beautiful rock formations.

Hiking route 2: Kasteelspoort to Cable Car Station
Start: Pipe Track entrance on Theresa Ave, Camps Bay
Hike time: 4.5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically moderate, physically fairly challenging
Terrain: Jeep track, stair like terrain, single rock path, ladders.
Short description: A beautiful hike up the 12 Apostles and through the valleys of the back table to the main plateau on Table Mountain. This hiking route displays magnificent views and a wide variety of Table Mountain flora.

Hiking route 3: Skeleton Gorge to Maclears Beacon
Hike time: 5 hours
Start: Entrance to Kisrtenbosch Gardens
Difficulty level: Technically moderate, physically challenging
Terrain: Loose rocks, riverbed, ladders, single rock path.
Short description: A hike up Table Mountain’s eastern slopes through indigenous forest. The hike starts at Kistenbosch Gardens and ends at the highest point on Table Mountain. The route is steep and shaded most the way up, although it can get very humid in the hotter summer months.

Hiking route 4: Tranquillity cracks via Corridor Ravine
Hike time: 5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically easy, physically challenging
Terrain: Jeep track, single rock path, large rock stairs, boulders.
Short description: Hike up Corridor Ravine through the 12 Apostles, starting from the Pipe Track this Table Mountain hike takes you to a secret hidden gem. Tranquillity Cracks is a magical hidden location on Table Mountain consisting of huge sandstone boulders and Yellowwood trees forming cracks, caves and passages leading to spectacular view points over Camps bay and the Atlantic coastline.

Hiking route 5: Woody Ravine
Hike time: 4.5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically moderate, physically challenging
Terrain: Jeep track, single rock path, large rock stairs, loose rocks and sands.
Short description: A direct and steep 12 Apostles route through a more forest like and wetter ravine. Often described as the steepest out of the several routes leading off the Pipe Track that is shaded in sections throughout the day.

Hiking route 6: Devils Peak
Start: Rhodes Memorial
Hike time: 6 hours
Difficulty level: Technically difficult and physically difficult.
Terrain: Single rock path, large rock stairs, boulders, rock scrambles, edges and exposure to heights.
Short description: There are many ways up to Devils peak but non are more exciting than Mowbray ridge, the knife edge path and the direct route to take you up. A thrilling hike with views of the two oceans, this hike is for the more experienced hikers with a head for heights and an exceptionally good fitness level.

Hiking route 7: India Venster
Start: Lower cable car station, Table mountain road.
Hike time: 3 hours
Difficulty level: Technically Challenging, Physically challenging
Terrain: Single rock path, large rock stairs, rock scrambles.
Short description:  A more advanced Table Mountain hike consisting of rock scrambles and exposure to heights. The route is known as a more adventurous route where one will be rewarded with exceptional views and an enjoyable terrain.

Hiking route 8: Cecilia Water fall
Start: Entrance to Cecilia State forest
Hike time: 2 hours
Difficulty level: Technically easy, physically moderate
Terrain: Well worn path, log steps, gravel road, river bed.

Short description: Hike through Cecilia Ravine passing huge blue gum trees and indigenous vegetation. This hike on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain takes you to a majestic waterfall, in a delightful spot, full of peace and tranquillity with splendid views.

Hiking route 9: Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine
Start: Entrance to Kisrtenbosch Gardens
Hike time: 3.5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically Moderate, physically challenging.
Terrain: Ladders, log steps, rocky riverbed, single path, wet and steep.
Short description: Hike up and down the two most popular routes on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. These slopes boast the presence of shade all day long from a beautiful forest made up of a wide variety of indigenous trees, such as the Milkwood, red alder, wild peach, yellowwood and more.

Hiking route 10: Constantia Nek to Table Mountain dams
Start: Constantia Nek parking lot
Hike time: 4.5 hours
Difficulty level: Technically easy, physically challenging
Terrain: Jeep track, single rock path, large rock stairs
Short description:  Hike to the 5 dams on Table Mountain and find yourself amongst the beautiful landscapes of the Back Table. This hike takes you to the peaceful parts of Table Mountain with a wide variety of flora and magnificent photo locations.

Rules of safety on Table Mountain.

  1. Never hike alone, 4 is the ideal party.
  2. Choose your route according to ability, fitness and experience.
  3. Use a guidebook, or alternatively go with somebody who genuinely knows the way.
  4. Ensure that at least 1 member of the group has a fully charged cell phone.
  5. Always go prepared for bad weather.
  6. Tell someone exactly where you are going and stick to the plan.
  7. Travel at the pace of the slowest member of the party.
  8. Never split up and go in different directions.
  9. Do not push the unknown.
  10. If you are unsure what to do, find shelter especially from the wind and stay put.
